Therapy versus coaching

Pete Pete

At Unmind Talk, we promote client choice and so clients can choose whether they would like to access therapy or coaching. Sometimes clients are knowledgeable about the difference between the two approaches but sometimes are not well informed, or think that they need one approach but would benefit more from another.

During your first session with a client, we encourage you to clearly explain what therapy or coaching is and isn’t, thoroughly assess their needs and wants, and discuss whether the approach you offer is best suited for them.

In general, we recommend therapy for individuals dealing with emotional and psychological challenges such as:

1. Mental Health Concerns. Therapy is particularly beneficial for those facing mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, trauma or other clinical disorders.
2. Exploring Past Experiences. Therapy provides a safe space for individuals to delve into past experiences and understand relational patterns to see how they are impacting them in the here and now.
3. Personal Growth and Insight. Individuals seeking deeper self-awareness and personal development can benefit from therapy as they navigate internal conflicts and gain insights into their emotions and behaviours.

Coaching is often well-suited for individuals who want to focus on practical and goal-oriented outcomes:

  1. Professional development: Offering guidance if you are navigating career transitions, seeking leadership development or addressing workplace challenges.
  2. Goal Setting and achievement: Assisting you in setting and reaching specific goals, whether in personal or professional spheres.
  3. Skill enhancement: Helps you to enhance skills like communication, time management, or work-life balance, contributing to your overall personal and professional growth.
  4. Parenting support: Providing strategies and guidance for parents navigating the challenges of raising children and fostering healthy family dynamics.
  5. Neurodivergent support: Offering tailored support and strategies if you have a neurodivergent condition, helping you navigate daily life and achieve your goals.
  6. Financial management: Assisting you in managing your finances effectively, setting financial goals, and developing strategies for budgeting, saving, and investing wisely.

There are of course overlaps and transferrable skills between the two approaches. The important things to remember are that you provide a clear explanation of your approach so the client can make an informed decision, that you work within the parameters and limitations of your training approach, and that you review the client’s goals, expectations and progress regularly to ensure your approach meets their needs.
